Niwot, Colorado

The little town of Niwot (the Arapahoe Indian word for left hand) is located on the Diagonal Highway midway between Boulder and Longmont in unincorporated Boulder County. It was plattedin 1875. The name honored Chief Niwot, of the friendly Arapaho Indian Tribe. Their encampment was on Left Hand Creek about three miles west of Niwot. Haystack Mountain was a favorite lookoutpoint for buffalo that roamed the area. Stone tepee groundings can still be found.  Locals and transplants alike are proud and intrigued with the history of Niwot.
